What is big data

Big data has been getting a lot of hype these days. But is it really something brand new that we just recently discovered? Where was big data before and how did it just pop out all of a sudden?

Big data is just data! To be really precise big data is considered unstructured or non-relational data that doesn't have any predefined schema. It can be in any form or shape.

Structured Data: Traditional way of storing data
It's your traditional way of storing data in the form of rows and columns using a predefined schema. Data coming from eCommerce sites, OLTP applications, POS data, CRM etc is stored in predefined structured format and that makes about 25% of your data.

Unstructured Data: (Big Data)
This is where your majority of data coming from that makes up the remaining 75%. Data coming from emails, blogs, sensors, social media sites, forums, web sites, machine sensors, network sensors etc make up the 75% and is considered big data.

So what is the hype really about?
We have always been collecting this unstructured data however we didn't have a way to mix structured data with unstructured non-relational data.

What's new now is that, we have the tools and technologies to collect, store and analyze all of this data together in a unified way.
